In Part 2 of our remote work Deep Dive, Scott sits down with Nick Bloom, a Stanford economist who has spent two decades studying remote work. Bloom’s research confirms that hybrid work is here to stay — about a third of Americans now work a hybrid schedule, and it’s not going anywhere. But the data also reveals some uncomfortable tradeoffs: promotion rates drop roughly 50% for fully remote workers, remote employees are easier to hire and fire, and the companies pushing the hardest return-to-office mandates tend to be run by older male CEOs. Bloom’s advice to young people? Go in four days a week.
